605 Weddings // Behind The Scenes Cover Shoot

It was a historic moment as the 605 Weddings vendors gathered on October 11 at Monick Yards in downtown Sioux Falls for the venue’s first styled shoot.

“We chose our Grand Hall for the photoshoot to showcase the 16-foot ceilings, fresh white walls, and impactful pendant lights that make this space a special spot for wedding ceremonies,” said Amy Boes, venue director and co-owner of Monick Yards.

The full building is 12,000 square feet with two large spaces: The Grand Hall and the Reception Hall. With the ability to host up to 350 guests, the warehouse-style venue can act as a blank canvas for couples and creatives in the wedding industry.

“I’m currently loving weddings with bold and earthy tones.”

“I think the way the vendors in the area collaborate is truly unmatched. We’re able to bounce ideas off each other and have a big hand in creating these unforgettable events.”

Jenna Bangsund // Jane Rae Events

Event planner and marketing designer of Jane Rae Events, Jenna Bangsund, was inspired by the “urban weddings” vibes.

“Going into designing the shoot, I knew I wanted to focus on a couple of trends for 2024 that I have been loving,” said Bangsund. “Monick Yards was the perfect place for this design, so I also used that as inspiration to pull it all together.”

A main focus for the shoot included elements of texture, whether it be in fabrics, glassware, and the floral design. The main event was the hanging floral installation, with each flower and branch carefully placed by hand by the Jane Rae Events team.

“We created the floral structure on branches which brought the design to a whole other level and gave it the texture it needed,” described Bangsund. “We were also very intentional in the blooms we decided to design with to get the look we were wanting.”

Jane Rae Events also focused on the use of brown sapphire, which is a color trend Bandsund says will be appearing frequently in 2024 and 2025.

For the talented cinematography group at PINstudios, they wanted to showcase what makes Monick Yards different from other event destinations.

“We really wanted to showcase the whole Monick Yards venue and how it could be used as a unique wedding destination,” said PINstudios client specialist and brand manager Thadeus Giedd. “This includes highlighting the distinctive

bar and the separate spaces of reception and ceremony hall. We also wanted to help build excitement for future couples looking to get married at this venue.”

Store manager of Ellie Stone Bride Jhena Pistulka says like many industries, nostalgia is more popular than ever. This includes bridal going back to simple elegance.

“We enjoy getting to put our creative juices together and create something for new brides to see and be inspired by.”

Monick Yards is also owned by the creative minds behind craft cocktail venues Highball, The Treasury, & Carpenter Bar.

This translates into couples having access to some of the best mixologists in the state with the ability to create custom event cocktails.

“We chose a simple, classic style wedding dress, but with a new twist,” recalled Pistulka.

The twist was quite literal, with a romantic, flowing bow placed in the back of the gown.

It’s styled shoot collaborations like this that challenge wedding vendors in a fun and refreshing way.

“I love styled shoots because it gives me a creative edge where I can try new things,” said photographer Jess Bowman of J.Bowman Photography.

While the Jane Rae Events team normally goes from start to finish with clients, they enjoy styled shoots to go through the same process to play and explore new trends and design.

“Being a part of styled shoots is such an amazing opportunity to design something that has never been seen in the area before. It is a chance to collaborate with other vendors to challenge ourselves,” said Bangsund. “One of my favorite parts of the whole experience of designing this shoot was showing the initial design to our floral design manager, Irany, and collaborating with her to create this bold, next-level design.”

It’s these local collaborations that bond all of the creative South Dakota vendors together.

“It’s amazing to see everyone come together and practice their passion,” said venue director and co-owner of Monick Yards Angela Merritt. “A styled shoot is truly a collaborative experience. We couldn’t be more grateful to be in this industry.”

A Shimmering Gem // Diamond Spur Events Center

Alicia Edsen held a simple, yet profound dream: To craft a space where people could gather amid the natural splendor of the Black Hills.

Her love of hospitality and entertainment stemmed from watching her parents, who own Double Diamond Ranch, create unforgettable guest experiences.

Edsen’s dream quickly flourished into reality once she met Maja Cromwell-Marsh.

Cromwell-Marsh exchanged vows with her husband at the Diamond Spur Lodge, located at Double Diamond Ranch, and the meeting of Edsen and Cromwell-Marsh sparked the beginning of a glistening friendship.

In April 2022, Edsen introduced the Diamond Spur Events Center, a nearly 7,000-square-foot venue cultivated from a dream and passion for experience.

“We’re committed to providing community members and couples with premium experiences for their celebrations and gatherings,” said Cromwell-Marsh, venue director of the events center.

Diamond Spur Events Center offers versatile spaces to host memorable gatherings, weddings, and receptions.

“Alicia’s and I’s passion for creating exceptional moments and fostering connections has become the cornerstone of Diamond Spur’s mission.”

Maja Cromwell-Marsh

The Cullinan Hall hosts up to 300 hundred guests. The grand hall features a rustic-elegant design, boasting high ceilings, a double-sided Rushmore granite fireplace, modern chandeliers, and polished concrete floors.

Cromwell-Marsh states that four garage doors line the building for an open-air atmosphere to allow natural air and light.

Two signature suites are available for couples to prepare for their special day.

For brides and their bridesmaids, the Farnese Suite transforms into a sanctuary of sunlight, allowing for a calm day of preparations. The private, bright, and elegant suite features a floral chandelier, a bright makeup bar, a steamer, a three-way mirror, a wet bar, a mimosa bar, and a floral selfie station.

“The venue is just moments from Mount Rushmore, Sheridan Lake, Keystone, and Hill City, making it the perfect place for any celebration.”

Maja Cromwell-Marsh

“There’s also a powder room in the suite, which ensures ease and privacy for bridal parties,” said Cromwell-Marsh.

If anything is forgotten on the big day, Diamond Spur Events Center has their clients covered.

“Our suites are stocked with personal amenities, snacks, and first aid that guests may forget or need on their big day,” Cromwell-Marsh shared.

Cromwell-Marsh adds that this suite is ideal for hosting short bridal or baby shower celebrations.

For grooms and their groomsmen, the Dresden Suite is designed to provide all of the conveniences needed for ultimate fun and relaxation before walking down the aisle.

“This suite is truly a signature space,” said Cromwell-Marsh.

The modern suite is highlighted by a television, a poker table, various games, a humidor stocked with premium cigars from the Tinder Box Cigar Lounge in Rapid City, a whiskey barrel wet bar, and a classic barber chair provided by Jake’s Barbershop.

“Our local partnerships allow for the addition of unique day-of services like a fresh shave or hot-towel facial,” added Cromwell-Marsh.

I’M PROFOUNDLY GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE EXCELLENCE THAT DEFINES THAT DIAMOND SPUR BRAND.”

Maja Cromwell-Marsh

The Diamond Spur Events Center is also paired with a 1,000-square-foot outdoor patio, equipped with patio heaters, an outdoor fireplace, and an inset fire pit leading the way to the scenic Black Hills landscape, including Spring Creek.

Cromwell-Marsh shares that the venue provides the perfect blend of Black Hills atmosphere with a modern, chic twist, which she and Edsen like to describe as “ranch-estate”.

“Our views are truly breathtaking,” she added. “We’re nestled among rugged rock formations, open grassland, and Spring Creek.”

Anyone booking the venue should expect to work directly with Cromwell-Marsh and her team from beginning to end.

“The journey typically begins with an initial inquiry, followed by the sharing of our pricing guide and a scheduled tour that can be in-person or virtual,” shared Cromwell-Marsh.

The owners add that their tailored and comprehensive experience ensures that each of their clients’ special days reflects their unique love story.

“Our goal is not to just host their event, but to provide an experience of unparalleled service and ease,” said Cromwell-Marsh.

The event space offers three distinct packages to help simplify the choices for their clients.

One option, the Marquise Package, allows couples access to the facility for one day from 9 a.m. to midnight. The second option, the Elegance Package, spans two days, while the third, the Brilliance Package, offers three days of access.

All packages include the benefits of both the bridal and groom suites, table and chair set-up, an arbor, a ceremony site with set-up and tear-down services, access to the caterer staging area, and a ServeSafe Certified bar team.

Advice from Maja

“Prioritize Your Bond: Remember that this momentous day is centered on you and your partner. While you may receive numerous suggestions and ideas, always keep in mind that, ultimately, this celebration is a reflection of your love and journey together.”

Jacee J Photography

“Our most popular package is the Elegance Package, which offers access for rehearsal, décor setup, and rehearsal dinner,” said Cromwell-Marsh. “This package also includes our customizable 360° video booth, six-yard games, and a day-of onsite event coordinator to ensure a seamless and stress-free celebration.”

She continued, “Our Brilliance Package is perfect for hosting multiple events. It includes our horse trailer mobile bar, and complete cleaning and teardown. This is perfect for couples wanting to host a welcome BBQ or farewell brunch.”

While choosing vendors can be overwhelming, Edsen and Cromwell-Marsh aid in taking the anxiety out of choosing the right one.

“We offer valuable vendor recommendations through our Industry Favorites section on our website, which features highly skilled creatives in the wedding industry with whom we have a trusted working relationship,” Cromwell-Marsh explained.

Cromwell-Marsh, Edsen, and their dedicated team understand that wedding celebrations represent pivotal milestones in their clients’ lives.

“Our commitment to their satisfaction is unwavering,” Cromwell-Marsh expressed. “This extends to every detail as we orchestrate an incredible day, ensuring that our clients and their families depart with memories they will treasure for a lifetime.”

A Prosperous Endeavor // Prosper Country Warehouse & Event Hall

“I think a lot of new businesses or big life changes for families these last two years started with COVID,” said Allie McLouth, owner of new venue space Prosper Country Warehouse & Event Hall.

For Allie, opening a modern event space in her small community of Lennox has always been an idea lingering in the back of her mind.

Alongside Allie is her husband and co-owner, Dustin, and the two have worked together to help her dream come to life.

“Prosper Warehouse & Event Center is a modern, industrial warehouse in a sea of barns,” said Allie. “While I adore the barns we have located near Sioux Falls, I wanted to bring some diversity to the venue scene.”

The personally designed event space was curated to host various events, but weddings are under Prosper Country Warehouse’s expertise.

“Prosper, yes, is mainly a wedding venue, but we know there’s so much more in store for it,” expressed Allie.

“I could feel God calling me to start something new.”

Allie McLouth

For the McLouths, Prosper Warehouse & Event Center was revealed to not only be a new legacy for their family but also for their surrounding community.

“We wanted to provide a unique, ahead-of-its-time venue space for every generation,” shared Allie. “But most importantly, we aim to serve and benefit our local community.”

The modern warehouse has space for up to 450 guests with an additional entertainment space above the main floor.

“The area can be divided into separate modified spaces for meetings, birthdays, and bridal party preparations,” said Allie.

Booking the venue for the client’s special day includes the main floor, lofted entertainment space, bridal suite, groom’s suite, bar, outdoor patio, and more.

“Our large outdoor patio is utilized with propane fire pits, seating, bulb-string lights, and a beautiful view,” said Allie.

Prosper Country Warehouse & Event Center is apart of the Sioux Metro Growth Alliance. For more information, visit sioux metro.com.

At Prosper Warehouse, wedding celebrations can be held indoors and if the weather permits, outdoors.

“The outdoor stairs leading to the second floor can be used as a bridal entrance for outdoor ceremonies on the patio,” Allie said.

When it came to the overall design of the venue, Allie shared two words that described the space perfectly: sleek accommodations.

“Our space is designed to look sleek without any added décor,” she says. “However, we offer multiple backdrops, personalized photo booth setups, two customizable event spaces, and all the necessary tables, chairs, and table runners.”

A kitchen for catering and two bartenders are provided for each wedding.

Prosper Warehouse & Event Center offers additional amenities for a seamless and stress-free day, such as walk- away cleaning, set-up and tear-down services, and local shuttle service.

Allie mentions that the venue can be rented out at a discounted rate for brides and grooms who are looking to tie the knot on a weekday.

“As more and more clients utilize Prosper, they will easily come to find its uniqueness and benefits,” she added.

Since coming into fruition two years ago, the McLouths have loved every step of the process and made it 100% their own.

Top Piece of Advice from Allie

“At the end of the day, youl’l be married regardless of where you decide to tie the knot. Choose the people you will be working with more than the space. The rest will follow seamlessly”.

“We put every part of ourselves into it. Our beliefs, our love for people, growing our community, and hands down being able to provide more to the city of Lennox,” said Allie.

She added, “The road hasn’t been easy, but we’ve been faithful and our hope is that Prosper will continue to carry on long after we leave this earth.”

605 Profile // Madison Motl

In October of 2022, Madison Motl was preparing for her own wedding when her aunt Becky suggested that Motl create her own floral arrangements.

“I thought she was crazy at first, but Becky used to work for a floral shop in Groton, so she was willing to give me some tips and guidance along the way,” said Motl.

She continued, “I began watching endless YouTube videos and calling Becky frequently with questions. She helped me find the names of every flower to order and quantities, and met with me to help find vases for my centerpieces and supplies.”

Throughout the process, Motl says Becky was battling stage four colon and liver cancer that was continuing to spread.

One week after Motl’s wedding, Becky passed away from her fight with cancer.

“The one thing I continuously thought about was how proud Becky was and how much encouragement she gave me to do my flower arrangements for my wedding.”

Madison Motl

“When I received the news, it didn’t feel real,” reminisced Motl. ”Becky was a second mom, a role model, and now a guardian angel.”

A couple of months following Becky’s death, Motl began creating bouquets and arrangements in her home in remembrance of her aunt. Motl’s love of flowers blossomed into her own business, Elegant Floral in Sioux Falls.

Elegant Floral specializes in curating personalized floral arrangements that complement customers’ floral desires.

“I decided to open this business not only because of my love of flowers and the smile on people’s faces when they receive them, but because I know if Becky were still here she would have wanted this for me and encouraged me every step of the way,” said Motl.

605 Stops By // The Wine Bar at Allure

In March of 2023, a new wine bar and event venue opened in Sioux Falls where you might not expect it: On the first floor of Allure Health Clinic.

Inside the picturesque building, owner and CEO Dr. Jeremy Storm treats patients, but says that The Wine Bar at Allure is his passion project.

“We’re trying to give people an experience they can’t get anywhere else,” he said.

The Wine Bar serves both food and wine with an emphasis on enjoyable, yet diverse selections. Manager of restaurant and hospitality Natasha Thacker ensures the bar’s offerings are well suited to the customers. A level-one wine sommelier, Thacker says she found her passion learning about wine and the different types of pairings.

“I like to ask for specifics of what the customer likes, be able to identify a wine that I think they might love, and serve it to them.”

Natasha Thacker

“I have a rotating wine list that I switch out weekly, depending on what’s new or from different regions,” she said.

Thacker keeps the mainstays available at all times and continually swaps out the other wines as she finds new inventory.

“This week it might be a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, the next week from Napa. I like to switch it up like that,” she explained.

Storm mentioned that while variety is an important part of the selection, palatability is the first thing he looks for in a wine.

“We’re trying to have really good wines and champagnes at a good price point,” he said.

Did You Know?

A wine sommelier, or a wine steward, is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional who specializes in all aspects of wine service as well as wine and food pairing.

Like Thacker, Storm is also a wine sommelier, and it is crucial to the pair to provide customers with wines they will really enjoy. To achieve this purpose, the Wine Bar offers wine flights consisting of three different wines.

“It’s a way for people to try a few different things, and it’s not too scary,” said Storm.

Thacker revealed that people will often get a glass of a wine from the flight that they liked, and sometimes, a bottle too.

Open 3-9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, The Wine Bar is open to anyone looking for a bite to eat or a glass of wine tailored to their tastes. Thacker says that she has deeply enjoyed making connections with the regulars, and that the customers are the best part of her shifts.

“The people that do like wine like to talk about wine, and that’s what I love,” she explained.

In addition to selling wine, beer, mixed drinks, cocktails, and soda, The Wine Bar offers a seasonal, health conscious menu.

“Everything we have on the menu we try to make healthy, including fresh quality fish flown in from Hawaii,” said Storm.

The menu offers deviled eggs, a variety of crostini, and sashimi, to name a few options.

What’s more, the different spaces in the building can be rented out for numerous events. Three private rooms can be rented out for events like business meetings, holiday parties, and lunches. Guests can also rent out the whole facility.

The lobby, bar, and patio spaces on the first floor are ideal for bigger parties, including engagement parties, bachelor or bachelorette parties, showers, and even weddings.

The booked out venue can host events anywhere from 50-120 people. The space also features a locker room
for guests, three bathrooms, and

two staircases which ascend to the chandelier on the balcony level.

“Clients have the whole space to themselves, and freedom to go with whatever their ideal decorations would be,” said Thacker, who loves the space for its “French Chateau vibes.”

She notes that the flow of the lobby, bar, and patio spaces bring movement and quality conversation to a party.

Guests can bring in their own food, but The Wine Bar also offers charcuterie options for partygoers, in addition to the regular menu. Charcuterie boards include bread and cheeses, nuts, jams, fruit and vegetables, and spreads.

Storm says that the venue is a one-of-a-kind experience, from the marble tables and the bistro chairs to the chandelier, the music, and the intentional design.

“Some people think this is an exclusive club, but other than the gym and fitness center, it’s all open to the public,” said Storm. “We’d encourage people to come check it out.”

Storm reveals that people will come to see him for their medical care, but will return and bring their family and friends to visit the wine bar and enjoy its relaxing atmosphere.

For Thacker, it’s all about the love of wine and making people happy.

“You go out to eat to have a good time, and you drink to have a good time. I want to be able to offer that,” she said.

Unveiling Timelessess // Anna Behning Photography

“Details matter,” said photographer Anna Behning, as she and a few members of her team looked over the final images from a styled shoot they had put together last February.

Behning and her team have titled the project “classic vintage shoot,” featuring a handful of talented Sioux Falls, Marshall, and Brookings vendors.

For these women, working together to create something meaningful to show future brides was the inspiration.

That, and combining their creativity to put together a fresh look for the bridal scene.

“The goal is to show couples what is attainable, what they can see and get ideas from,” said Behning, “but also just show the realness of the wedding industry and the trends going on.”

The theme for the shoot was Behning’s brainchild.

“I wanted to make it feel very classy and timeless with the black and white, like a black tie event,” she said.

BEHNING ON TRENDS

A wedding on trend on the rise is having your guests be in a dress code that matches your décors color palette.

With smaller details, such as the floral arrangements by Island Floral, and some ’60s inspired heart-shaped sunglasses, Behning said the shoot also took on a vintage feel.

Sarah Snodgrass from Beetle Blue Creations explained that the vision for the shoot was both specific and open to collaboration from the vendors.

“It’s really fun working with Anna on shoots,” said Snodgrass. “She gives me creative freedom of like, ‘Here’s the idea, here’s the feeling, here’s the vibe behind this. You go with it.’”

“With a styled shoot, I always aim to show people what can be done, and that the vendors can create a vision perfectly for you.”

Snodgrass’ touch was two custom hand-stitched veils for the bride. Behning said that the delicate blusher veil, which came down over the bride’s face, added to the timeless feel.

“You don’t see that very much anymore,” reflected Behning. “It made for such creative photos.”

Snodgrass can also take older veils and update them to incorporate something old or something borrowed into a bride’s wedding day. As Snodgrass says, “The sky is the limit.”

“My goal for each wedding is to make sure that every couple feels like they got the full Farmhouse experien”It’s the special details that make any wedding yours.” ce.”

Behning said she picked her vendors strategically, looking for a team who, like Snodgrass, consistently go above and beyond with their work.

“All of these people are very organized and willing to go the extra mile for the couple, and they do a great job,” said Behning.

The couple was real life sweethearts Cody Johnson and Chessa Harrington, the latter of which runs her own beauty salon, Pretty Baby 605.

Planner Renee Bauman from Hitch Studio brought an on-trend approach to the stationery and décor.

“A new trend that I think brides would enjoy is white ink on black paper. Or putting black ink on black paper, which is called tone-on-tone,” she said.

During the shoot, Bauman helped utilize the space at The Atrium at Blue Haven in a way that showed off the venue and brought variety to the photos.

The team was not only able to shoot in the reception hall, but also in the hallway, by the bar, and by the fireplace.

“There were so many little pockets of the room to take photos of,” said Bauman.

“We have no middle men and love the fact that the two of us are super involved and available to our couples from day one.”

Behning says that these little touches were what made the shoot stand out. Even the jewelry from Faini Designs was selected purposefully, to match the bride’s Ellie Stone Bride gown.

“The rectangle shape of the diamond cut made the ring feel upscale and timeless, and the earrings and bracelet brought together every little piece of detail on the model,” said Behning.

At the end of the shoot, Behning said the team ate the cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes.

“We were dead-tired, but there was a moment of ‘woohoo, we did it,’ and then we got to eat the cake,” she laughed.

Bauman says that this camaraderie was evident throughout the shoot, and that all the vendors were really rooting for each other.

“That’s the beauty of our industry,” she said. “We’re never truly competitors because we’re going to see each other at all of these events and work really well together, and it makes me smile.”

605 Spotlight // Swiftel Center

The process of planning a wedding can be overwhelming. It is often difficult to find the right venue, caterer, decorations, and equipment to achieve the perfect day.

But what if planning a wedding could all be done in one place?

Located in Brookings, the Swiftel Center does exactly that. The 30,000-square-foot arena acts as a one-stop shop that offers a variety of in-house, full-service amenities for events, such as weddings.

“One thing that is great about the Swiftel Center is that we have a dedicated event manager to help with wedding planning,” said Swiftel Center director of marketing Ashley Biggar

Multi-purpose Facility

The Swiftel Center is home to a variety of events like concerts, galas, benefits, and rodeos.

Biggar says they will guide clients every step of the way. In the initial meeting, the event manager plans a tour, answers questions, and determines what space is most suitable for the couple’s vision.

Clients are able to choose from a variety of spaces to accommodate guest lists from 50 people to 5,000 people.

The Swiftel Center allows the bride and groom to have creative control over their spaces. The venue provides staple pieces, including chairs, tables, lights, and drapings. Clients then have the option to add finer details to match their desired style.

“If the couple wants glitz and glamor or something more modern and simplistic, we can do that,” said Biggar.

“People come to the Swiftel Center to be educated, be entertained, or to celebrate.”

If a piece of equipment is not offered within their in-house options, the Swiftel Center will work with outside vendors.

“We have a lot of great partners around the area,” said Biggar.

Biggar adds that their event manager will be the point of contact for other vendors leading up to and on the day of the wedding. Additionally, couples have the option to decorate the rooms themselves or bring in a decorator of their choice.

“We work with the couples and the other parties involved, helping make their vision a reality within our space,” said Biggar.

Clients don’t need to stress about food or drinks, as the venue offers in-house catering services. Prior to the wedding, the Swiftel Center works with clients to curate the perfect menu.

“Every couple is so unique and different. We’re able to accommodate and help with whatever they want.”

Ashley Biggar

“We provide a complimentary tasting so couples can try options they would like to have,” said Biggar.

As a special option, couples can customize the recipes by modifying them to meet their preferences or bring their own to recreate during the tasting. All wedding dining and service will be taken care of by the in-house food and beverage department, but couples may bring their own wedding cake.

Biggar says clients are able to rest easy knowing that the event manager and staff have everything under control and are supported.

Piece of Advice from Ashley

“Utilize those resources and people that are there to help you. We’re there to serve you, so you can be the least involved in the actual day itself, be present, and really enjoy it.”

“Our team wakes up every morning and they’re excited about helping and being a part of your big day,” said Biggar.

By stepping in and helping out with anything and everything, Biggar says the Swiftel Center team ensures the success of their client’s big day because there is only one.
